Everything Is Awesome: Legoland Brick Dash 5K

Happy Almost Halloween as I embark on 5K #34 The Legoland Brick Dash. This is the second theme park-based race that I’ve done as I’ve done 4 Run Disney weekends prior and have one planned in my next month.

I wanted to get their early since when I went to get my bib on Thursday I was told I’d still have to wait in line day of for my tee shirt and I had wanted to be able to run it back to the car as well as stop at an outside venue prior to arrival to use the restroom…. However, nothing was open at 630AM and so while I ran to the port-o-let my mom took my ID and Bib and picked up my shirt which was great considering it was 641AM at this point and the race started at 7AM.

I was a bit turned around and flustered while I gained my bearings and made my way to the staging area where there were MCs on stage hosting some warm up calisthenics until about 653am when they started the national anthem and I had to try to maneuver getting into my running belt that was tucked under my shirt to grab my headband. I was successful and so with that my OOTD of my 2017 Wine and Dine Rapunzel costume with my Pink Fresh Foams was complete.
After the anthem it was announced there were 4 groups….

Wheelchair
Sub 7-minute mile
Sub 10-minute mile
Everyone Else

I had been standing between the 10 minute and ‘walker’ banners at the start, but people kept inching forward and I was going with the flow.

The first bout of fireworks went off…then the second… I was in the middle of this group and so I pulled to the side thinking this was the 7 minute group until they said the next group was the last one (I guess the wheelchairs didn’t get fireworks) As I was standing right up front I got a bit of ash in my right eye but I was able to quickly blink it out and press forward.

The First eleven minutes was running through the parking lot and I began to briefly regret not popping in my headphones however soon I entered he park, and all worries were pushed aside

Not too soon after arriving inside the park I approached mile marker #1 with my Fitbit saying I had run .99 miles in 12:25 with a 12’26 pace

Seconds after that I reached the first Character Stop. Now at first I didn’t think this race was going to be timed so my thought was to wait for all the characters however once I got my bib and saw it was chipped I thought of the Brick Or Treat Characters one of the Instagram’s I follow had posted and confirmed would be most of the characters on course for the race and so I had told myself that if I only stopped for ONE stop it would be the witch and that just so happened to be the first Character I passed

That stop only took a few seconds to a minute compared to Run Disney character stops that can take 3-5 minutes on the shorter side of the spectrum.

About two minutes later after looping through the HEARTLAKE CITY part of the park was the first of TWO Water Stops (Most 5K’s I run just have one at the midway point or just shy of marker two, so I felt spoiled)

Looping through the miniature area I tried to take a snap of the Florida Southern Miniature especially since I’ve run past the actual campus during Watermelon however it came out blurry…after this we went through an area that was set up as one of the Treat Trails for the Parks’ Halloween Event before getting to the next Character

I’d now been running for about 24 minutes give or take when I entered the Water Park portion of the course. Earlier in the Week when I went to do a run around the block the ground was slick from the previous evenings rain and I was skidding and so to be cautious I slowed myself down considerably during this portion of the course.

Said Water Park portion took roughly Five minutes before I was exiting the park and meeting with Dracula

All that excitement already and I hadn’t even reached Mile Marker TWO yet which I finally did with my Fitbit registering 2.13 miles 30:25 minutes and a pace of 14’15

As we made our way back into the CITY section of the park there was a Lego Cop meeting and he actually had a bit of a line compared to the other characters and so I decided that especially with slowing down in the Water Park that I’d skip him and in the time it probably would of took to met him I wound up pausing at a bench to tighten up my shoelace.

It was now 35 minutes in and I was now in the Ninjago Area (one of two new Lands since the time I actually visited the park) and there was a character from that franchise which since Lego Ninjago is probably my least favorite of the movies I skipped this meet as well.

At this point I looked at my tracker and thought I had about ¾ of a mile to go and 7 minutes to make a PR and for a moment I pondered flooring it however I thought nah I’m having too much fun…

About two minutes later was the second water stop followed immediately by another meet… The Mummy

And at this part of the course the characters just kept coming fast and furious around practically each bend making me glad with my previous choice about not gunning it for a PR as within a five minute span I had met not only the Mummy but Lady Dracula, Emmet from The Lego Movie and the Scarecrow

At this point I was 41 minutes in and still in the park so obviously I wasn’t going to finish in a minute…

By the time I go to Mile Marker Three my Fitbit had me at 3.22 miles 48:09 Minutes and a 14’56 pace

Finally I crossed the finish my Fitbit had me at 3.3 Miles 49:03 minutes with a 14’51 pace meanwhile my Official Time via Athlinks was 48:56 with a 15’44 pace

Would I sign up for this race again in the future...defiantly
