It’s time once again to get sweaty for scholarships though as race day approached for the inaugural race in this year's Summer Sunrise watermelon series I didn’t think I’d be getting sweaty… just soaked as rain was initially in the forecast for the occasion.

Do the the uncertainty of mother nature my outfit of the day was my Long Sleeve Wine and Dine 2020 Virtual 10K shirt and a pair of Old Navy shorts as well as my Watermelon Bondi Band as I felt that would be appropriate.

From last year's event we had it down to a system as to where to park/drop off and I was dropped off at about 640am with a good 10 min walk to get to where I needed to start.

I was seeded in group 9 of 10 and waited at the front of the area and was having fun listening to some of the older runners in front of me comparing notes on their various hip and knee replacements… I can only hope I’m able and motivated to keep moving at that age.

I was off to an okay start… well at least for the first .10 of a mile because my shoe untied and I had to pull to adjust it.

Soon after this I overlapped with the Finish Line (3:58 a new PR LOL) before heading forward.

I reached mile 1 in 17 minutes and I knew then I wouldn’t be on par with where I was last year or even at some of my more recent races. Sure, telling myself I just came off of a 30 hour work week is no excuse but still I was hard pressed to AT LEAST finish in under an hour for my own sanity.

Two minutes later was the merge point (19 minutes elapsed)

And I had fun for a bit running behind and than passing back and forth a mother and son who were running where the mother for stretches was carrying the boy on piggy back (I saw them at the finish and gave the boy a fist bump for completing the race he was adorable) but anyway back on track

12 mins after the merge (31 mins elapsed) was the water stop…I was personally taking a sip from my bottle every .60 miles but it was refreshing to get that extra little pick me up before reaching mile 2 two mins later (33 mins elapsed)

I don’t know if it was the humidity mocking me for wearing a long sleeve shirt or my tired legs from that long week leading into the race but it took a whole SEVENTEEN minutes (50 mins elapsed) to get to the merge back onto the roadway from the jogging path. By then my fitbit had said I had already reached 3 miles even though I had yet to meet that marker and I was above last season's 47-49 min finisher range and I just wanted to cross that final threshold as the sooner I did the sooner I got my Watermelon.

About a minute later I hit marker 3 (51 total) and I crossed the finish in EXACTLY 53 mins with a 17’03 minute mile according to Athlinks (while my fitbit stated I ran in 53:02 with a 16’34 minute mile.
