“Running” In September:

While there haven’t been any cancellations or moves from live races to virtual as of yet and some of my larger races have dropped medal reveals it doesn’t mean we are out of the woods as races have been making last minute modifications to make things run smooth and safe.

With my September race that was no exception. I ran the Fallen Heroes 5K as while there has been plenty of discourse when it comes to the police over the past year this race was run on the 20th anniversary of 9-11 so I had to sign up. Plus it was a new route for me so the chance of a local race not going around local lakes and/or through downtown was an added bonus in my eyes.

For the “COVID” related changes all the post run awards would be cancelled and instead of start waves it would be an open start shoot from between 7-830 am

Packet Pickup was a simple in/out drive in at the police station which was quick and convenient
As for the race…

We arrived to the parking area at 706 am only to be told the lots were full and I could be dropped off but my ride would have to park elsewhere...it took me about 3 minutes to pin myself up and another 3 minutes to make it to the start shoot and set up my music {soundtrack for the run was the American Idiot soundtrack, OOTD was my home sewn galaxy top, burgundy old navy capris, paint splatter bondi, and I had my color run gaiter over my face...weather was 73 ish degrees}

The course was interesting and for the first bit it was a narrow sidewalk and by .13 miles I was concerned I’d be stuck behind a couple with no way to pass...thankfully it only lasted about .03 more miles and by .16 I was moving fluidly again….

It would ebb and flow between a paved trail and residential areas that may or may not also be part of the path that connected local parks together as like I said it was my first time doing this route.

At about .33 we rounded a corner passing a trail marking sign and a few signs on the side of the rode commemorating fallen officers

When I looked down and saw I was already at 1.10 I realized there wasn’t any mile makers or if they had them it was just chalk writing on the pavement that I wasn’t paying attention to… at this point I’d ran for 16:28 with a 14’54 pace {slower pace than my mile point of Augusts watermelon race but again I’d already gone a tenth of a mile longer}

Since this route looped around the outskirts of a golf course I couldn’t help but to pause and take photos warning about rogue golf balls and I also passed by people dressed in full military gear

I hit the water stop at 1.76 {26:41 minutes with a pace bumped up to 15’04}

I reached the 2 mile marker at 30:26 and a 15’10 pace {much higher than Watermelon but I was paused a bunch to take the above posted pictures and I was fully aware of this… plus there were lots of inclines in the first mile and that had drained me}

Speaking of pictures here are some road signs

At about 2.74 I looked up and I noticed we were running parallel to the highway so that was fun to look up and see a toll plaza…

I got to mile 3 on my fitbit at 46:08 15’22 pace which was a higher pace than watermelon but five minutes earlier

My official time was 48:49 {38 seconds over my longest watermelon time in August but again… pictures} with a pace of 15’42 {a sub 16 m/m so I will take it}

At the end of the run while they didn’t have what they referred to as a ‘finishers village’ they still had a table set up with coffee and donuts (cliché much) and another set up with bananas and granola bars as well as some photo ops
