It's Really Not So Scary (Aching Quad-October recap)

Things are seemingly looking up in the running stratosphere. Okay sure my pace still isn’t down to pre pandemic levels and as my half marathon training plan kicks in this month I’m all kinds of second guessing myself but February is still a reasonable way away right?

Anyway my race this month is the Aching Quad Challenge…

I ran this last year and it was my first live race since the Covid Pandemic and had been morphed from a road race to an off road trail run. This year it was a Hybrid of sorts with the Friday and Saturday night 5Ks back to the road while the Saturday Morning 1 and 2 mile runs were on the trail.

Even though this year wasn’t in a bubble there wasn’t a pre-race pick up and instead bibs and shirts were to be picked up at the lakes parking area between 515 and 630. It was rainy earlier in the afternoon and the race would go on rain or shine unless it was lightning (thankfully the only rain was pre-race) and because of the weather we got on site at about 5 because we wanted to be able to get a spot in the lot which we did. After grabbing my gear I waited back in the car till a little after 6 because I didn’t know how spaced out corals would be. They definitely were not as spaced as Watermelon probably due to the race being all on the lake’s path and not starting and ending on the street.

My OOTD was my Wine and Dine 2017 shirt, Old Navy Black and Grey Long Leggings and my Gold Sparkle Headband. It was cool and rainy when I got dressed and left the house but by race start it was in the high 70s/low 80s with a humidity making it feel about 10 degrees more.

Pre race announcements were made to announce that the path would be open to public joggers going in both directions, there would be no water stops (I assume it was less due to pandemic reasons and more due to the above mentioned path still being open to public...thankfully I had my own hydration) also a reminder that while Friday’s race ran clockwise Saturday’s race would have the start/finish swapped and run counter clockwise. They also encouraged runners to take their time crossing the start as it was chip timed and your personal clock wouldn’t start till you crossed the mat.

We crossed over the finish mat with a time of 3:41 that’s a new PR right? Nope we were just .27 miles out… wishful thinking am I right…

When I was at about .64 I slowed a bit to take my first water stop and decided that I’d take a sip at intervals of roughly .60 ish miles and it really worked out…

I reached mile 1 in 15:11 with a pace of 14’47 which was less than the Friday 5K last year though that was to be expected given the more welcoming terrain.

Like I said I did my water stops at intervals and had another one at 1.12 + 1.81

I reached mile 2 in 31:23 and a pace of 15’21 again much better than last year's off-road edition though by then my ‘choice’ of wearing long leggings and a long sleeve shirt even with the sleeves rolled up was starting to hit. Not to mention the fact that since the pavement was wet my sneaker kept skidding and I was afraid that if I pushed myself too hard I’d slip and I didn’t want to do that. I’d rather be last than be injured.

2.29 was another water stop…

For some reason I never managed to screenshot when I reached mile 3 however my final time was 49:33 with a pace of 15’57 which was about 3 minutes give or take less than from this race last year but about a minute or two more than my summer runs and a good seven ish minutes above my 2019 PR

Saturday Morning was a Holloway Park AKA the Bane of my running existence… why did I choose to torture myself and on my BIRTHDAY no less!!!!

My OOTD was my “rust” Old Navy Capris, Galaxy Shirt and black sparkle headband.

Race one was my 1 mile run where I ran 1.05 in 15:35… it was about 9 seconds longer than last year so no PR but than again the last .10 miles or so I couldn’t even see more than a step in front of me due to it being so humid my glasses fogged up…. Plus again remember it rained the night prior so some of the dirt parts of the path were still muddy and I didn’t train for a mud run LOL (I did pause for a sip of water once or twice but didn’t mark it nor did I mark it for my other race)

I went back to the car for about a half hour to trade out water bottles and de-fog before heading back toward the start which was pushed a little back

sorry….I had sorcerer radio on while I was waiting to line up and now that is stuck in my head so your welcome!!!!

When lining up there was a whole group from the kids running club. I didn’t notice as many kids last night or at the start of the 1 Mile (which by the way like this one it ran on gun time so everyone was encouraged to spread out right on the start line)

I passed a sign that said mile one at about 1.17 though that was a trail marker and not from the run so I don’t know when the actual mile split occurred. At this point I was 18:44 minutes in with a 15’54 pace which was more than last year at this split but also I hit this split last year at 1.04 if that makes a difference….

I finished in 33:59 with a pace of an even 17 minute mile… three minutes over last year so again no PR for me but I did finish.

I saw people eating breakfast being served but I didn’t see where it was being served until I was on the other side of the path and we were planning to head to breakfast anyway.

And then for the final run of the event the Saturday 5K.

By the time we went round trip to the airport to pick up my sister I had been cooled down and decided not to take a proper shower and so instead I decided to re-wear the “rust” old navy leggings just now paired with my green kohls tank and a light blue bondi band

I passed the “finish” mat same time as the night before at .27 so far so good right…wrong! Unlike the night before the fact that the lake was open to the public and not closed off for runners was definitely felt and I was stuck behind two girls walking and texting and couldn’t pass because there was a family or two walking dogs in the other ‘lane’

By the time I attempted to hit my stride I was at .62 miles and so I figured I’d just take some water every .60-ish again as it worked for me on friday.

When I reached mile 1 it said 17:07 with a pace of 15:30….that may look off but also I took that screenshot at 1.10 miles into the course.

By about 1.5 miles a friend texted me pausing my tracker momentarily and once I got going again there were more non racers as well as having to wait for ducks to cross the path and a mean sun glare….

FINALLY I reached mile 2 (er rather 2.08) in 33:22 with a pace of 16:01
While I knew I wouldn’t beat my PR or even my Friday time I just set my sights on finishing….

At marker 3 (3.06) I was at 49:46 and a 16:14 pace

My final time was 51:46 and a 16:40 pace

Will I run this one again...maybe but probably not until 2023 as next year it’s traditional weekend falls right after the High Holidays and I’m already waffling on if I want to sign up for an out of town run in between the two Holidays and I can’t see taking THAT much time off….
