Sweaty for Scholarships-Watermelon Series June Race

It’s time to get #sweatyforscholarships again as I put my endurance to the test with the summer sunrise watermelon series (though to be honest by the time we get running sunrise has already passed)

This is another local running club race where even with putting my APRIL 2019 42 min PR as my estimated pace I’m still seeded in mini wave nine of ten putting little to no distance between myself and those god damn strollers

It also means little pomp and circumstance when picking up bibs so let’s get to racing

I decided to loosely theme my looks this year (June pride, July patriotic, August Watermelons) so I opted for my pride livi tank (more of an athleisure top than performance) my livi blue skort and my pastel rainbow bondi

I got to the space where I’ve been regularly dropped off for 21 & 22’s events only for the lot to be full and the road to be closed further up than normal…my ride was able to stop to let me out and than wait off to the side for faster runners to vacate proper spaces

I started my walk off at 635 and got to my mark at 646

It was a cool 72 feels like 75 and very buggy… I had at least one fly up my nostrils as I was waiting I swear.

My music choice was my 15K mix on shuffle where it cycled through 15 of 52 songs

As far as goals for this run it was just to finish on my feet in less than an hour.

At 7:04 I crossed the start mat and jogged a brisk four minutes before my “false finish” a quarter of a mile  out the gate.

While I was making good time no more than a minute passed before I was almost run down by a father pushing his toddler in a wagon (that’s a new one)

Another six minutes later Nanette passed me (unlike mayfair she was starting behind me weather she was seeded this way or just bumped back to join her buddies)

At 16:45 I reached mile marker one…

I decided to average my splits and finish times between my 2023 5Ks so far (not counting castaway and only using active miles from Cars) and my average mile one time is 17 mins by comparison

A few mins later it was time to merge onto the jogging path and it was smooth sailing around the lake and to the water table before reaching mile 2 at 34:46 (average 2023 time 35)

Again it was pretty uneventful the last mile unless you count the two kids running past me on course unaccompanied or the bird I took a picture of

There was also many more kinds of fowl, a rabbit and I even saw a woman move a turtle from the road during the first mile but really didn’t pause much for critter pics

It was finally time to merge back into the road where I reached mile three in 53:28 (average mile mark 52 mins)

My finish time was 55:14 which while it’s 10 mins give or take seconds over my PR is on average with what I’ve been doing in races in 2023 it will be interesting to see where these averages go between the rest of the series and the two additional 5Ks I have planned for the year.

I noticed when I crossed the finish line (with 32 people behind me give or take depending on if they started or not) that I didn’t get a medal. I asked a volunteer if I overshot them in the finish shoot and was told they ran out but were taking names to order more to be given out at future events… I was asking where to go to give my name when a club member handed me a medal saying to the volunteer she knew “people”
